Remote Handling Specialist Oxford Technologies Ltd (OTL) has recently secured a competitive contract to supply the UK National Nuclear Laboratory with a multi-function rig to house and deploy numerous measurement heads to record visual, profile and surface roughness data on highly irradiated materials during post irradiation examination. The rig will be taken from OTL concept design (see illustration) to final design, build and inactive commissioning at OTL’s new Assembly, Integration and Test (AIT) Facility co-located with the company’s Head Office in Abingdon, Oxfordshire. The rig will be used for a number of years in a highly radioactive environment where precise scientific data will be recorded. OTL’s knowledge of remote handling and expertise in specifying and delivering radiation tolerant equipment will be key to the successful delivery of this important contract.
Oxford Technologies Business Development Director, Stephen Sanders explains “OTL see this as an important expansion of our business building on the transfer of our approach and expertise from nuclear fusion thru nuclear fission decommissioning and now to specialist equipment where remote handling in extreme hazardous environments are the key requirements. We look forward to developing a relationship with National Nuclear Laboratory not only supporting their own programmes of work but also working with them to understand the opportunities to support NNL in the wider UK nuclear decommissioning challenges.”
